Maria Szymanowska (1789-1831) Poland

Composer and one of the first virtuoso pianists of the 19th century. Her compositions, primarily piano works, songs, and short chamber pieces, as well as early piano etudes and nocturnes in Poland, paved the way for the brilliant style of the period before Frédéric Chopin. This is the Nocturne in Bb, considered one of her most mature works, and the link to download the score.




Szymanowska composed around 100 piano pieces. Like many female composers of her time, she wrote most of her music for the instrumentation available to her, that is, solo piano pieces. Here are two works in the same video (and more piano pieces): her Fantasia in F major and the Capriccio on the Mona Lisa romance. Both scores are also included.





Szymanowska's musical style had an obvious impact on Chopin's musical language. Her skills as a performer expanded her technical possibilities as a composer.
