Composer, teacher, writer, and music critic. She wrote works for piano, chamber music, orchestra, voice, and vocal ensembles. She taught music history and composition at New York University (NYU).
Here's her Duo for clarinet and oboe. The link to download the score is below.
Bauer's music includes dissonances and the use of quartal harmony, though mostly within a tonal framework. She briefly experimented with serialism in the 1940s. Here is her Viola Sonata, Op. 22, with a link to download the score.
As a writer and music critic, Bauer was respected for her intellectual approach to new music. She was published in several magazines, edited Chicago's Musical Leader, and earned her great respect in the music world with her book, Twentieth Century Music. Besides being one of the first textbooks to discuss serialism, it also featured numerous female composers in contrast to other contemporary music textbooks. We love you, Bauer. <3
Here are 4 pieces for piano, Op. 21 with their respective link to download the score.
