Composer, pianist, soprano, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year concert career, she became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the "Valkyrie of the Piano."

In 1862, her family emigrated to New York. In the first few weeks, she met Louis Moreau Gottschalk, a pianist and composer, who quickly took it upon himself to promote her as an artist. Her first published work after her New York debut was the Waltz she dedicated to Gottschalk. Here's a link to download the score and the video so you can listen to it.
Carreño composed around 75 works for solo piano, pieces for voice and piano, chamber music, choir, and orchestra. The Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex in Caracas is named in her honor. The center serves as the residence of the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra. Interestingly, there is also a crater on Venus named Carreño in her honor.
